The Bird and the Bee

Again and Again and Again and Again

(Metro Blue)

Record Review by Janelle Finamore

When listening to The Bird and the Bee’s debut EP, sometimes you may feel like you are floating in a psychedelic surreal world and other times you may feel like wanting to get up and get your groove on at a high energy dance club. Either way, this EP elicits feelings of goodness, happiness, and dreaminess. The members of the bird and the bee -Inara George and Greg Kurstin - embarked on a musical journey together in their own little world without any goal of hitting it big. However, it looks like they are going to make it whether they like it or not.

“Again and again,” the first track, is gloriously repetitive, which is a rarity; you literally want to just hear it again and again! (Well, maybe that is taking it a little too far). The infectiously upbeat, techno-type of music of The Bird and the Bee is hard to turn off. “I’m a broken heart” is a little bit of an anachronism that belongs in the ‘60s or ‘70s. Lyrics such as “I try to make the best at happiness” are accompanied by an unconventional ‘60s-ish melody that is not in tune with the current time. This makes the song even more rapturous.

The highlight of the EP is definitely “Fucking Boyfriend.” Lyrics like “When you lay down with me, you never slept that night” make this tune a perfect hit for the clubs. The EP concludes with a “Fucking Boyfriend” remix that has water-like drum sounds and other intricate beat experimentation.

It is such a tease to hear only four songs of The Bird and the Bee. The duo’s self- titled debut album, due out in 2007, is going to be highly anticipated. George and Kurstin also have a song called “Because” which isn’t on this EP but can by heard on MySpace; it sounds as good, if not better, than “Fucking Boyfriend.” It is humble for two musicians to record an album for the pure joy of music rather than the anticipation of fame and fortune. Perhaps the carefree, non-pretentious attitude of these two budding stars is what produced such a great musical debut.
