Cary Brothers

Who You Are

(Bluhammock)

Record Review by Alexis Roberts

Before I begin, let me get one thing straight: Cary Brothers is one person. First name Cary, last name Brothers, the name of the band ain’t “The” Cary Brothers, it’s a one man solo effort. Now that we have gotten the most important thing out of the way so you all aren’t running around like newbies, I can tell you a little bit about his latest and only full length album.

Brothers is from Los Angeles like every other musician in the world, and Zach Braff loves the dude. Because of his lucky placement on planet earth his music has been featured on the Scrubs and his song “Blue Eyes” is on the Grammy-winning soundtrack for everyone’s favorite sappy indie love story, Garden State. So before Brothers ever had a chance to release an album there was already a lot of buzz. Well now the time has come and he’s given us an album full of the same type of songs that the world and Braff fell in love with in the first place. Brothers music has so much mainstream appeal that it almost makes me ill to see that he hasn’t signed with a major label for his first album, although this may say something about his ideals as a musician (jn a good way, mind you).

The songs on Who You Are are that ooey gooey whiny boy stuff that we used to love Coldplay for and now love The Fray for; in another year or two, everyone will catch on to Brothers and love him for it. Why? Because he has long hair and a beard and that is what’s hot right now… Because kids will like it and, most of all, because the older crowd that’s trying to be hip will be obsessed with it and make it enormous.

The music isn’t so super innovative or original - just some good ol’ fashioned guy-with-a-guitar tunes. It’s safe- it’s vanilla. I don’t know about you, but I like vanilla. It’s actually my choice flavor. Hey guys… Cary Brothers is a good person to namedrop if you’re trying to flirt with the cute girl in the knit cap and nerd glasses or the trendy one with the mini skirt and pink tank top. I doubt it will get you scene points, though, so don’t try that shit with me because I’ll laugh at you. No, but really, give Cary Brothers more than a namedrop - actually listen to him because you’ll probably hear something that you like.
