Heather Duby
Heather Duby
(Sonic Boom)
Record Review by Janelle Finamore
If there was ever anything dubious about Heather Duby’s musical work, her third album certainly lays all doubts to rest. From upbeat piano riffs to organic cello and strings, Duby has come a long way in finding her own voice in the all-too-repetitive pop culture that permeates the average listening audience. Settling for a simple Dido sound could have been the road Duby went down, but thank the gods she didn’t. Instead, her style is indie rock blended with pop, which results in upbeat and catchy music that still retains its intelligence.
“Over and Under Arrangements” is one standout; its chromatic piano riffs, catchy drum beats, and unforgettable melodies are a must-listen. In “Still Rough,” Duby manages to transform the simple lyrics of “All I needed was you. Thought you needed me too” into convoluted words via her vocal expression, attitude, and unconventional melody choice. “Listen,” another eccentric tune, is similar to Bjork’s style as evidenced by techno-ish drum beats and repetitive lyrical phrases.
Duby’s writing seems to produce hit after hit. For example, “Wrestle and Cuss” is an emotional track including gorgeous strings and piano. Duby also excels in writing imaginative lyrics such as “How would I stop you, you live underwater. Once you go down there your heart never leaves” (“Gone Aground”). “Dullard or Are You a Breakfast Alcoholic” is the best song on the album. It starts with an intricate, cool bass line and vocal duet with a great melody. The only downfall is the airy vocal heard in the chorus, but the melody and production compensate. Heather Duby is able to appeal to a wide audience. Indie rock chick fans as well as pop princess idolizers should listen to this one.
