Gayngs
Relayted
(Jagjaguwar)
Featuring a plethora of artists, Gayngs is a debut album by a band that features few, if any, first time artists. Combining talents from groups such as Bon Iver, Solid Gold, P.O.S., the Rosebuds, and more, it’s no surprise that they’ve found a footing in tripped out slow moving grooves. A bit more trippy then some of the fans of the above mentioned bands may enjoy, Gayngs sets a slow pace from the beginning and doesn’t press on the gas for much of the ride.
On tracks like “Cry” and “No Sweat,” the band prefers to let the melodies filter out over coarse instrumentation and sporadic beats, while they let their freak flag fly on “False Bottom,” an avant garde instrumental and “The Beatdown,” a trance-infused diddy reminiscent of Lo Fidelity Allstars. Using multiple instruments throughout the album to heighten the experience of this group album, Gayngs is at times sloppy in its overall cohesiveness, but a nonetheless interesting and unique album, which, if given the chance, you may just find yourself “relayting” to more then one would expect.
