Girls in Trouble
(JDub)
Alicia Jo Rabins plays most instruments on the debut album of her band Girls In Trouble, but what she puts on display shows she’s anything but “in trouble.” The arrangements are clean, poppy and smart. She draws much of her inspiration, lyrically, from the lives of women in the Old Testament, while musically she draws heavily from folk and rock influences.
Despite the “dated” source material, for lack of a better word, Rabins manages to create a sound that seems firmly rooted in the present. With bands like The Decemberists and Vampire Weekend making string and folk arrangements hot again, Girls In Trouble comes at a good time to sound old again.
Using a loop to play portions of violin or guitar back to her, Rabins uses a method similar to KT Tunstall to compose and arrange her songs, usually with similarly catchy melodies. Standout tracks include “I’m a Desert,” “Secret/You’re Always Watching,” and “Hunter/The Bee Lays Her Honey.” |
