![]() record reviews: Goldfrapp Seventh Tree (Mute)
Goldfrapp has released a new album, and it seems to have come out somewhat silently. Having been released back in late February of this year, you might have already heard a little bit of buzz about it, but probably not nearly the praise it deserves. You know Goldfrapp for her electronic dance anthems like "Strict Machine", but prepare to forget everything you know about her music before you pop this album in.
Upon first listen to this album all I could think was “what?”, and kept thinking that I was listening to Sia. Goldfrapp's little scratchy voice sings not the electro-dance tunes we’re used to, but a collection of simple folk songs. Definitely not what you would expect from the electro-pop princess. Don’t wait around for another hit dance single, either, as there is not one on this album.
So is the album even good? Well, actually yes. Up until now Goldfrapp's music could be categorized simply. With Seventh Tree not only has her image changed (she looks like an Olsen twin on the cover) but her sound has evolved to a point of being no longer recognizable as “Goldfrapp”. I challenge even the biggest fans of hers to be able to recognize these songs. However different this music is, though, her talent is still obvious and apparent.
Unfortunately, I have a sneaking suspicion that this album will find itself being shelved by many a Goldfrapp fan and written off as an unsuccessful attempt at reinventing herself. If it can be taken for what it is worth, I foresee it having more success - but one must remember to keep an open mind while listening. — Alexis Roberts More by this writer: Menomena - Live - June 12, 2007 Creeping Weeds - We Are All Part of a Dream You Are Having Winterpills - The Light Divides The Spares - Beautiful and Treacherous Thing |
