Great Northern

Silverlake Lounge - March 16, 2009

Live Review and Photograph by Alexis Roberts

Great Northern are a five piece from Southern California. It was no shock that when they played the local Silverlake Lounge (on one of the evenings that it’s not a designated drag queen hangout) that their fans bought enough tickets to sell out the show, which provided the audience with very little elbow room and a whole lot of excitement.

Songs from their new album, Remind Me Where the Light Is, which will be released April 28th, were what made up the meat of the evening.  They played "Snakes", "New Tricks", "Warning", "Numbers" and many more. The new songs are very melodic, shoegazey and feature a lot of keyboard action. It sounds like a continuation of their last album but with fluffier synth that makes your ears tingle. Some of the slower songs could even be considered indie rock ballads and feature mostly the vocal stylings of Rachel Stolte (who stole the show in her white velvet dress and boot combination) with hints of vocals from Solon Bixler.

Although their last album received good reviews and got them the buzz that they certainly deserve, Remind Me Where the Light Is will more than likely be the album that really puts them on the map and makes them the band to keep an eye and an ear on in 2009. They played a handful of older songs including "Home", the single from 2007'sTrading Twilight for Daylight.

Judging by the reaction to the new music that they played this new album is going to be very well received by fans and critics alike. They will be heading out on a tour for the duration of the month of May, so mark your calendars- you’re going to want to catch them before they blow up.
