![]() record reviews: HiM Peoples (Bubble Core) Before throwing on your leather pants and get ready to rock out, you should know that the Finish faux-metal band HIM have not released a new album (thank goodness); they share their name with another band full of art-jazz-get-drunk-and-groove music-makers. This band is the original HiM, and they were kind enough to let Ville Valo and company share the name. Peoples, for lack of a better term, is a weird record—but not in the sense that HiM are pushing themselves to be avant-garde, just that the music is jazzy, happy, smooth, and fun. It qualifies as “weird” because A) there isn’t a lot of music that sounds like Peoples, and B) it’s a far cry from the previous projects from Doug Scharin and the other band members (which include Codeine and June of 44, just to name a few). There aren’t many vocals, and most of the ones that you do hear are so understated that they rarely catch your attention, let alone upstage the music. The trumpets, flutes and xylophone remind me of summer time. It provides great ambience, and is the perfect very cool album to throw on during your summer barbeques while you relax with your feet in the pool and drink something adorned with a little umbrella. — Alexis Roberts
