Kasabian

Mew

The Music Box @ Fonda - October 11, 2006

Live Review by Amber Henson

Let me say this: rock and rollers should never tuck in their shirts.  But we’ll discuss that momentarily.  It was not Mew who committed this act, and we’re starting with them.  Mew is from Copenhagen, Denmark, and have a penchant for graphics, ballads, and loud drums.  For the majority of their songs, they used a large screen in the background to showcase mostly cats or other creatures playing the violin.  Their sound is similar to The Arcade Fire, but with a Scandinavian twist.

It took me a while to put my finger on whom, exactly, Kasabian’s Tom Meighan was reminding me, but I did eventually come upon it:  he’s Mick Jagger combined with Liam Gallagher—except really, really thankful.  He moves around the stage like Jagger, parading around in his tucked-in polo and bright white sneakers.  And he sounds like Liam and loves to bang his tambourine.  But he’s nothing like Liam in personality because after every song he would say “Thank you!” and “I love being here at the Music Box.”  This was the oddest thing, that he kept saying the venue name; I guess he picked that up in small towns, but it wasn’t really working for LA, because we have no loyalty to one particular venue.

The crowd responded with considerable rocking out in front of the stage, and during the well-known songs the balcony got up and was rocking out to a lesser degree.  Kasabian puts on a concert worth attending, especially if you miss the Britpop days of old.
