Let's Wrestle

In the Court of the Wrestling Let's

(Merge)

Record Review by Kevan Peterson

Let’s Wrestle is an English rock trio whose earnest songs and slightly off-kilter lyrics put them in a weight class slightly ahead of some of their peers.  Favoring funny song titles, such as “My Arms Don’t Bend That Way, Damn It!” and “My Eyes Are Bleeding (Interlude),” with seemingly off the cuff lyrics rooted in honesty, Let’s Wrestle has a unique blend of humor and heart.

In the Court Of The Wrestling Let’s, (no that’s not a typo, the album flips the band’s name) Let’s Wrestle sends out their first studio recorded love letter to heartbreak, hurt and humiliation.  In tunes such as “My Schedule,” frontman Wesley Patrick Gonzalez lays out his plan for what sounds like a typical day, but given the downtrodden instrumentation and lonely hollow vocal harmonization, it’s clear he’s suffering, but in a self-aware, somewhat humorous way.  On first single “We Are The Men You’ll Grow To Love Soon,” the band makes a promise it’s clear they don’t intend to break.

It’s clear that Let’s Wrestle is planning on tackling material that could tussle in the ring with bands such as Pavement, The Strokes, and The Wombats.  Given the heart and energy they put into their material, they may not win over everyone’s hearts, but they do pin a few of their rivals to the mat occasionally.
