The Library EP

(Feudal)

Record Review by Kevan Peterson

The six song debut EP showcases The Library at their power-popping best.  Most comparable to Maroon 5 (perhaps having as bastard child with Rob Thomas’ burgeoning solo career) this album delivers catchy tunes from the opening track and keeps the party going for its short limited duration.  Located in Los Angeles, CA the band utilizes their connections and studio time effectively, creating a glossy EP mixed by Mark Needham, who has worked with radio favorites, The Killers.  It may not be long until The Library is played on the same stations and to similar results.  Although at times embracing a bit more of the dance than the rock side of their dual personality, they should find success in both arenas.

The album opens with swirling synthetic sounds before breaking into a catchy bass and drum driven sing-a-long on “It Ain’t Over.”  Of course it ain’t over, this is just the first track.  “No Mercy, Only Violence” uses multiple synthetic melodies to create an atmospheric rock song capable of making your feet tap and your head bob.  A weird, almost Atari-like breakdown happens towards the end of the track, which weakens the song slightly, but kudos for trying something new.

“One More Time,” finds lead singer Court Alexander sounding like a male version of Cher, with dance beat backing to match.  Bringing a slightly nostalgic sound back with this track The Library makes it once again cool to sound weak with love.  The final original tune comes in the form of “You Don’t Need No Doctor, Sugar” a catchy song that holds its own against the rest of the tracks.

The final two songs are remixes of earlier tracks, the previous “Doctor” remixed by DJ Skeet Skeet, who ups the dance ability of its predecessor, and “No Mercy, Only Violence” remixed by DJ Skrillex who seems to make the track less danceable by adding staccato breakdowns and cop sirens.  Overall the EP is a great debut showcasing the potential of The Library, but the remixes feel a bit unnecessary, offering additional time, but not additional substance.
