Fall In Love

Record Review by Michele Fair

The twee/electronic pop genre seems to have almost faded away in today’s modern music scene, but for true fans, fortunately there’s The London Apartments and The Bad Spellers, both stellar examples of what good lo-fi pop music should sound like.  On Fall in Love, fans get a taste of what both bands have to offer separately and then together on the title track.  London Apartments singer Erin Fortier has a delicate, high voice that is sort of a cross between Joanna Newsom’s vocal wavering, and Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino’s high soprano.  Behind her delicate singing is some really great keyboard work, drum machine, and synth drone.  The combination makes for a beautiful, lush listening experience.

As for The Bad Spellers, the vibe is a little more playful.  The band combines a mix of fun, lighthearted music sprinkled with Matt Suggs (Butterglory) like vocals.  Although front man Tony Parmenter’s voice is a little off key, it really adds to the innocent sweetness of their music.  Blending Casio keys with toy instruments creates a playful concoction of sugary sweet poppy goodness.  The band hails from Tokyo, Japan, and their fun and quirkiness are infectious.  The band has already begun to make their mark on the American scene and will be planning a US tour soon.  Fall in Love is a terrific sampling of what both of these bands have to offer, and is a great introduction for aficionados of sincere, talented bands who produce great indie pop.
