The Lovemakers
Troubadour - July 8, 2006
Live Review by Amber Henson
Here’s a question for you: who of these is more committed? The guy who drove from Oakland to Los Angeles, just to see The Lovemakers, or the girl who had a beer bottle dropped on her ankle and stood there, bleeding, for the majority of the show because she didn’t want to give up her front row spot?
Well, considering I was the one standing behind the girl, watching the pool of blood from her foot that was slowly mixing with beer, I’m gonna vote for bloody foot. It was really quite amazing. I mean, there was glass still in there and stuff.
Alright, now that I’m done grossing you out, let’s get to the concert. This was one of the first Lovemakers shows without their old keyboard guy, Jason Proctor. In his stead was new keyboard guy and guitarist, Brandon Arnovick. Arnovick did no guitar work this time; he just stayed behind the synths and looked a little overwhelmed at times. At one point, he finished his notes, then pointed enthusiastically at Jeesh (Josh Kilborne really), the drummer, as if he was about to lay down quite a solo. But such was not the spot for a solo. It was cute on Arnovick’s part in a new guy kind of way.
They started the set with “Fashion,” a song that they used to not play at all. Scott Blonde, singer and guitarist, came onto stage only wearing a vest, and immediately took it off, indicating what kind of concert this was to be. And it was quite impressive. Lisa Light, singer and bassist, was wearing a small see-through black dress that was eventually covered not only in sweat, but also with water (by her own doing). There was a small amount of the making out that they’re known for, and much bantering between the singers.
The Lovemakers seem a little bored by their set at this point, but they still put on an awesome show that has everyone jumping and grinding by the end of the twelve songs. When they start touring their new stuff, there should be no stopping them. |
