Matt & Kim

Music Box @ Fonda - October 2, 2010

Live Review by Amber Henson

I don’t believe I have ever been more glad to *not* be a part of a mosh pit.

Let me explain. Sure I have been in some mosh pits (for instance, an ill-fated Sum 41 concert in college) and I have seen many.  And I knew from hearing their music and watching their music videos that the mosh pit at Matt & Kim would likely be a little nuts.

But it was ca-ray-zee.  Tons of crowd-surfing, tons of pogo-ing.  Afterwards, a girl outside who had clearly been up front had lost a shoe and didn’t seem the least concerned about it.  But after the show we were given, I suppose I wouldn’t be that upset about losing a shoe, either.

Matt & Kim were entirely responsible for whipping the crowd up into a frenzy.  I have never seen two people happier with each other and with their jobs.  Kim derives more pleasure from playing the drums than I’ve ever seen anyone derive pleasure from … well, anything.  There was much joyous yelling, raucous swearing, and thank yous to the crowd.  They played for just over an hour, declaring that this was pretty much the longest set they’d ever done and that after that they wouldn’t be able to play more very well.  I hadn’t thought of that, but, yeah, with only two people to entertain a crowd, and the massive amount of energy they were putting into it, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went straight to bed afterward.

Not only were the two playing us great music, they were just amazing to watch.  Kim, well known for her crowd walking - that is, walking out on top of a crowd instead of surfing it - did so, with the caveat from Matt that this had not gone well the last couple times she had attempted it.  She came out a few feet, shook her ass, and walked back, while Matt exclaimed over his partner's moves: “When you have an ass like that, you have to shake it!”  Not to be outdone, Matt inverted himself while playing the next song, so that he was playing his keyboard as if doing a solo keg-stand.

Later, Kim stood up on her drum stool and attempted to thank everyone for coming – but she got choked up in an amazingly sweet and endearing moment.  Emotions were running incredibly high at the show, and the audience happily sung along when instructed, yelling at the top of our lungs.  It was a very fulfilling show, and if I hadn’t looked at the clock, I would have had no idea it had only been an hour.  Matt & Kim are gift-givers when it comes to their music and their concerts.  I felt privileged to have been a recipient.
