Midnight Movies
Nights EP
(New Line Records)
Record Review by Alexis Roberts
Midnight Movies are one of the bands that make Los Angeles one of the best places to live. I can see this band frequently and it rocks and I feel bad for those who don’t get this opportunity. After last years release of their full length badass record Lion The Girl, they decided to deliver once again, another badass record - this is an EP, but less songs doesn’t necessarily mean less badass.
The opening track is a cover of the 1967 hit song "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues. If you don’t know that song in the first place, you may want to familiarize yourself so as to be able to appreciate the way that Midnight Movies really put their own spin on it.
This EP also contains remixes of tracks off Lion the Girl, one of which was done by Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner. For being a remix, Zinner's "Souvenir" is damn good, danceable and doesn’t stray too far from the original song, which is always nice. A remix done the way most remixes should be done… what a concept. There is also a remix of "Patient Eye", which unfortunately falls a bit short of the Zinner remix and has more of the deconstructive attitude to it. The song is still recognizable but it’s definitely not as good as the original.
All in all, this little EP was a great way to follow up Lion the Girl. The missing pieces of the puzzle are in their place and they sound pretty great. Gena Olivier is still the hottest woman in indie rock and life is good.
