Sometimes the little blurbs that publicists stick on CDs are way off, and I don’t get it… sometimes it’s so right on, you aren’t sure what else to say – it’s so easy and simple… the little Murder Mystery sticker namedrops the Velvet Underground, Buddy Holly, and Pavement. Wow – how can I top that? First off – the title of the album is brilliant. Just gotta say that. Secondly, this is one of those albums that doesn't look like it sounds.
The first song hits with, yes, a definite early Velvets feel – and Lou Reed styling vocals that are kind of unsettling, mainly because it sounds like it could be a really happy Lou Reed singing a garage-pop song – and that’s not quite how I expect to hear Lou Reediness.
But then, something interesting happens. The music strays away from what it says on that little sticker. It does something different… or maybe I’m just imagining it… but I hear a little bit of the Strokes going on. Maybe the Strokes if they were pretty stoned, but it’s there. Then, the second song hits, continuing to… ah… umm… stroke, but there’s a very nice little X like country punked melody that circles around the guitar as well. They didn’t say nothing about the Strokes or X. Then I notice the third song is titled “Love Astronaut” – and that I gotta hear. Right Now. Technobeat intro, into Lou Reed bouncing around with some female vocals moving in for a nice dynamic and melody, and it’s almost New Wave, but weirder. There’s definitely more garage-pop than new wave electro, and yeah – sure – throw in some out of tune sounding guitar twang and you can say “Hey, sounds like Pavement” – but anyone who can make it sound like Lou Reed is having a very happy day in the park is alright with me.
