![]() record reviews: Of God and Science Of God and Science (Detach)
Starting out with a nice and heavy drumbeat with a layer of soft and swirling guitars, Of God and Science immediately hits a mood that pulls you into movement. Rolling along slightly modern Brit-pop lines that run across bands like Elbow and Doves, and perhaps a bit of calling out to the gods of radio heads in the vocals, Of God and Science definitely feel like a band that is not from Albuquerque. From the guitars and then down to more piano-based songs, sort of falling into a Pink Floyd meets Keane beach party, the CD moves solidly through the songs, never letting you get too comfortable in one direction, but never taking you too far down the wrong path, either. The third song, “America’s Queen,” rocks a bit more in a sort of glam rock '70s vibe, but the band still holds on to that British vibe. The pop songwriting moves into Actionslacks territory at time, but backed up by music that cuts like a cleaned up Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, if that makes sense. Less fuzz… and then after that hit of rock, the band flows back into a more piano pop sometimes '60s balladry steadiness throughout the rest of the album.
