To most people, hardcore is hardcore and there’s not really any variance on the musical structure of the albums that exist in the genre: a growling vocalist, hard-hitting drums, and pounding guitar lines.  But those people have clearly not listened to Paint It Black’s latest album, New Lexicon.  Released on Jade Tree Records in mid-February, the album is the creation of band members Dan Yemin (vocals, guitar), Josh Agran (guitar), Andy Nelson (bass, vocals), and Jared Shavelson (drums).

The lyrics have a point that goes beyond the common “us vs. the man” themes and actually delves into the societal rants. There’s even a caveat within the liner notes at the conclusion of the lyrics for “The Beekeeper”, a song that grazes on the topic of suicide. A band that is politically aware and socially conscious with actual musical talent and integrity? Go figure.

Three albums into the band's career and things are steadily moving forward. Now working with J. Robbins and Oktopus, a member of the hip hop phenomenon Dalek, the band is delivering a hardcore sound with studio intelligence.  Not turning their back on the gritty quality that has been present in their past discography, the band has their producers’ expertise to create an in-your-face album with musical curiosities that will surprise even the most critical hardcore listener. Give it at least two spins – it’ll only take an hour of your time.
