Sugar & Gold

Creme

(Antenna Farm)

Record Review by Alexis Roberts

Not everyone is going to like Sugar & Gold because they really are a matter of taste. I’m not going to lie to you because if you don’t like disco music you would be pretty pissed if you read how awesome Creme is and then ran out to buy it only to find that it is ultimately a disco album. I put the record on and immediately felt like they were ripping off Of Montreal in every possible way, but after giving it a few spins realized they are nothing like Of Montreal. The only way that they can be compared to Of Montreal is if you take into consideration the lopsided stage fashions of both bands.

There are 11 songs that make up Creme and they all sound like you have heard them before. If you were lucky enough to live through the 1970s , if you have ever shopped in a department store, or even been stuck in an elevator for an extended period of time, you are likely to feel as if all of these songs have been performed by other bands. The beauty of this is that they have not. Sugar & Gold has a way of writing songs very reminiscent of other songs, I suspect purposely; so if you want to hear vaguely familiar disco music then this is probably right up your alley. It’s unfortunate that they will be tossed into the “novelty act” category.  Everyone will run around telling people that their favorite band is some sort of “serious” music but if you ask them whether or not they like Sugar & Gold it will be the old “Oh yeah, they’re so funny” answer.

Until I saw them live I was still unsure as to if I could deal with them or not. However their lively stage outfits and antics proved my hypothesis: yes, I do like this band. How can one possibly deny a band with a singer who wears his own merch on stage with a sailor hat and a pair of scandalously clingy white bellbottoms? I am pretty good at predicting the future but as far as this band goes I am completely torn as to if and when they will catch on to the general public. I’ll leave that for you to decide.
